After an extraordinary 36 years with whistle in hand, one of Queensland’s most respected officials, Stewart Ting, has officially retired from High Performance Netball.
Across nearly four decades, Stewart has built a reputation defined by professionalism, consistency, and passion - qualities that have made him a pillar of both men’s and women’s netball communities across Australia.
Earning his National A Badge in 1999, Stewart has since umpired at the highest levels across two states, including the HART Sapphire Series, Netball NSW Premier League, and numerous State League competitions. His remarkable career has featured multiple Grand Final appointments, Trans-Tasman representation, and countless state and national tournaments.
While he steps away from the elite High Performance pathway, Stewart’s contribution to the game is far from over. He will continue to officiate at local, regional and national levels, including M-League, and will play a key role in Netball Queensland’s 2026 Umpire Mentoring Cadetship, travelling across the state to support and develop the next generation of officials.
Reflecting on his career, Stewart shared that his journey began with men’s and mixed netball back in 1999 at the Perth Nationals, and that he’s witnessed the sport’s evolution firsthand:
“I’ve always supported Men’s and Mixed Netball, I remember when there were just six umpires at Nationals. To see how far it’s come, the growth, the endurance of so many people who have pushed it forward, it makes me smile. I love where our sport is today.”
Queensland Suns President Darren Gillespie said Stewart’s impact reaches well beyond the rulebook.
“Stewart’s contribution to netball, and particularly to men’s and mixed pathways, is immeasurable. He has not only upheld the highest standards of officiating but also invested deeply in the next generation of umpires. His leadership, humour, and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on our community, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything he’s done and continues to do for the game.”
From grassroots tournaments to international stages, Stewart’s voice on the court has become synonymous with fairness, respect, and excellence. His ongoing commitment ensures that even in retirement from High Performance Netball, his legacy will continue to shape the sport for years to come.
The Queensland Suns thank Stewart Ting for his decades of service, mentorship, and contribution to our game - and we look forward to seeing him around the court without a whistle in hand.
